Portland Helmich is an expert TV host and producer who covers many beats but is most dedicated to increasing the public's awareness of natural and alternative forms of healing and the way they can not only address illness but enhance well-being, as well. She's the creator, host, and executive producer of What's the Alternative?, a national talk show about healing and wellness on the DISH Network. She's investigated alternative healing methods on HealthWeek and Healing Quest on PBS, the ABC News affiliate WCVB-TV, New Morning on the Hallmark Channel, and Oxygen, where she was an alternative medicine correspondent. She's also written for Body & Soul and Alternative Medicine magazines and is the host and producer of Kripalu Perspectives, a series of podcast interviews with leaders in the natural health world who teach at the renowned Kripalu Center for Yoga & Health. Health and wellness are not her only focus, however. Portland's voice was heard on WGBH Radio, where she read the news during NPR programs like Morning Edition, All Things Considered, and Marketplace. She's hosted segments on a Comcast home improvement series and hosted Nitebeat, a live evening Comcast Network talk show covering all topics. She hosted a job recruitment series on New England Cable News and a magazine travel show that aired on Discovery Home & Leisure. As a producer and writer, Portland has worked on programs airing Animal Planet, the Sundance Channel, PBS, Lifetime Real Women, the Hallmark Channel, Oxygen, Veria Living TV, Wisdom Television, WCVB-TV, New England Cable News, and more. As a media coach, she has enhanced the public speaking skills of authors and various professionals preparing for television interviews and public presentations. Portland began her career as an actress, studying at Circle-in-the-Square Theatre School at New York University. She's performed on stage, in commercials, films, corporate videos, and on soap operas including All My Children.
